Sweet Oslo presented with pain when opening his mouth. Dr Kirsten and the team at Advanced Vetcare performed a CT and located an abscess in the temporal muscle. Based on the CT a small incision was made and a grass seed was removed!! Oslo has since recovered and is back to happily eating and drinking pain-free!

Matilda was an abandoned stray cat who was taken on by her wonderful new family. She has several medical issues including blindness and loss of her left eye (from glaucoma), a heart murmur and an overactive thyroid. She came to our oncology department due to multiple skin cancers (squamous cell carcinomas) across the top of her nose (nasal planum). These carcinomas can be seen in the first image. Surgery is a commonly used treatment for this cancer and involves removal of the front of the nose. Given the cancers were quite superficial, we treated with plesiotherapy, a topical/ local form of radiation therapy available to patients at AVC via a hand held strontium probe. Matilda tolerated it really well with the typical radiation side effects (crusting, redness) and the area has healed beautifully! Swipe to see her beautiful nose now! Well done Matilda!

Sweet Teya is now 5 months post mitral valve clip placement at Advanced Vetcare. V-Clamp is a new option for treating dogs with mitral valve disease that are at risk of developing congestive heart failure. Advanced Vetcare is the first clinic in Victoria to offer this minimally invasive procedure. Before V-Clamp, open heart surgery was required to repair the mitral valve in dogs. With V-Clamp, the mitral valve is repaired via a small device applied using a catheter placed into the heart without the need for open heart surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass. Advanced Vetcare`s combined team of specialist medicine and surgery, and dedicated intensive care vets have made this exciting advance possible.
"There`s a lady outside who needs help - her dog is giving birth on the footpath!" is not something that the AVC reception team expected to hear on a Sunday morning.
Lovely Delilah, a French Bulldog had given birth to her second pup, aptly named "Robertson" after the street he was born on.
Delilah had an emergency cesarean and ended up with 5 gorgeous babies - one of course named "Tommy" after our very own emergency vet Dr Tommy who performed her surgery!
Look at these beautiful healthy pups!

With hot weather ahead we see an increase in pets presenting to our emergency centres with heat stress. Heat stress is a sustained increase in body temperature that overwhelms the normal cooling mechanism. It is more common in dogs and guinea pigs.
The earliest sign of heat stress is increased panting that will not stop during or after exercise.
Top tips to avoid heat stress:
- avoid exercise in the heat of the day
- make sure your pet has access to plenty of water
- always provide shelter from the direct sun
- actively cool your pet after exercise by thoroughly wetting the coat with cool water on hot days.
Heat stress can be fatal, particularly in older, large breed dogs, or brachycephalic breeds such as French Bulldogs and Pugs.
If you suspect your dog has heat stress, immediately hose them so they are wet to the skin and place a fan on them in a cool spot. If this does not rapidly calm them down, seek emergency veterinary treatment as soon as possible. Our number at Kensington is 9092 0400 - our vets and nurses are available to help.
Please be snake-aware when exercising your pets over the next two days. Tiger snakes are very common in the Melbourne and Geelong area are frequently bite dogs and cats. If you pet is seen with a snake, or collapses / vomits whilst exercising (even if they immediately recover) please seek urgent veterinary attention. Our emergency centres in Kew, Kensington and Geelong are stocked with snake anti-venom for all common snake bites.
Avoid off leash exercise in areas with long grass or close to creeks and rivers in periods of hot weather.
This week the Australia Small Animal Veterinary Association Conference (ASAVA) was held on the Sunshine Coast, QLD. Dr. Luke Johnston, one of AVC`s Internal Medicine Specialists, was invited to speak on feline and canine esophageal & respiratory disease. Luke is passionate about educating veterinarians on these topics to enhance knowledge around these sometimes challenging cases to diagnose and treat. Luke is often jet-setting to speak at conferences so keep an eye out for his next talks!
