Warmer weather = INCREASED INCIDENCE OF HEAT STRESS in DOGS. As we move into summer this week, please be aware of the risk of heat stress in dogs. The dog`s ability to thermoregulate is largely a function of respiration. Any reduction in the ability to breathe can reduce the dog`s ability to cool via panting. The two main groups of dogs we help as heat stress patients are brachycephalic breeds, such as English and French Bulldogs, and older, larger breeds of dogs that have laryngeal paralysis. If your dog starts to pant uncontrollably or takes a long time to settle after exercise, they may be becoming heat-stressed.
An immediate effort to cool the core temperature by hosing down and placing a wet towel on their coat is recommended. If they do not rapidly settle, please seek immediate veterinary attention as prolonged high body temperature can be very dangerous.
Please avoid exercise during the hot periods of the day, and provide shade and plenty of access to fresh water for your pets.
As always, our network of emergency hospitals, backed up by specialist veterinary care, is available in Kew, Kensington and Geelong, 24 hrs, every day of the year.
